The tray and the enclosure are a pair, not two purchases. Most disappointments in the shower zone come from choosing them separately — a tray from a catalogue, an enclosure from a photograph — meeting for the first time on site. Here is the logic for pairing them properly.
Start from the plan and the size. Square trays typically come in sizes like 80×80 and 90×90 cm; rectangular ones run from 100×80 to 120×90 cm and beyond. For a comfortable daily shower, 90×90 is the sensible minimum, and a rectangular tray gives the freedom of movement the body notices at once. Measure the room together with the door swings — the bathroom's and the future enclosure's alike.
Tray height is the first structural decision. The classic raised tray with an apron forgives a great deal: the trap fits beneath it without touching the screed, which is why it is the frequent choice in older buildings and in renovations with limited options. The flat tray — a few centimetres high — gives the contemporary, low line, but wants the drain planned in the floor.
The third way is the floor-level shower with a linear drain — a shower zone with no step at all. Beautiful and accessible for older people and children, but with one honest caveat: it is planned in the screed during the renovation. Doing it afterwards means opening the floor — so this decision is made at the start, not at the end.
Tray materials repeat the logic of bathtubs: enamelled steel for a hard, glass-like surface with a long life; acrylic for a warm touch and lower weight; mineral composite for a stone-like feel and a dense, quiet sound. For a family bathroom in daily use, enamel and composite are the long-haul choices; acrylic wins where weight matters.
Two technical details to check in the specification: anti-slip and drain capacity. Some trays are offered with an anti-slip surface — sensible with children and older people. And a large rain head pours more water than a standard waste carries away with ease — the drain's flow rate is matched to the shower above it.
The enclosure is chosen to fit the room, not the other way round. A pivot door needs swing space but gives the widest entry; a sliding door is the answer in tight bathrooms where nothing may open outwards; a folding door tucks its panels inwards and wins space in niches; and a fixed panel — the walk-in — gives maximum openness with minimal mechanics.
Glass is a matter of safety before aesthetics: enclosures are made of toughened safety glass, most often 6–8 mm thick, with heights around 195–200 cm. An easy-clean coating — a thin layer that keeps water and limescale from settling — is the small extra with the largest everyday effect.
The pairing rule: the enclosure is chosen for the tray's nominal size. A 120×80 tray asks for a 120×80 enclosure — and the enclosure's adjustment profiles absorb the small wall deviations every real bathroom has. The position — niche, corner or open wall — determines the model family before the design does.
The order in time: the tray goes in with the tiles or before them, connected and tested there and then; the enclosure is measured after the tiles, because it stands on the real dimensions, not the drawn ones. The finale is the silicone — applied to the manufacturer's instructions, it is the boundary between a dry bathroom and a wet one.
